After a close game between the Calumet Christian School (CCS) Patriots, the Victory Christian Academy (VCA) Lions emerged with a 4-3 win, making them the champion of the first annual South Shore Christian Conference baseball tournament at Babe Ruth Field in Griffith, Ind.
In a game full of struggles and setbacks, the Lions were determined not to give up, and the determination led to the most prominent win of the season.
Early on, the game did not look good for the Lions. Until the fourth inning, the Patriots maintained an early lead of 3-0. Calvin Reisinger and Evan Wilson both obtained RBIs in the fourth inning, brining the score to 3-2.
Due to a superb pitching game by Evan Longhi and Calvin Reisinger, the Lions were able to consistently get opposing batters out fairly quickly. However, it was not until the sixth inning when Longhi got of a bases loaded jam. This resulted in the Lions scoring another run and tying the Patriots, 3-3.
As Mac Price came up to bat, there was much apprehension in the crowd. This hit could be the winning hit, or possibly lead the team into extra innings. However, Price was able to score a run and secure the 2012 South Shore Christian Conference Champions for the Lions.
The Patriots’ Mac Zambrano and the Lions’ Evan Longhi were named as top runner ups for the Tournament MVP. However, one of the Lions’ pitchers, junior Calvin Reisinger, was named all Tournament MVP.
